Black Rock is nestled on the western edge of Bridgeport. It has the vibe of a nautical seaport town that harbors an eclectic group of passionate folks from the locals who sport their own t-shirts to hip artists, musicians, young families and retirees.
In our neighborhood, culture is everywhere and inspires everything. You can find it on Fairfield Avenue at the Burroughs Community Center where the non-profit organization “Our Woven Community” teaches refugee women sewing skills to create one of a kind bags, purses and scarves. You can taste it in our diverse restaurants, from the kebabs at the Turkish cafe Bereket to the tres leches cake from the Mexican panderia H&H Bakery, from the maple bourbon baby back ribs at Walrus + Carpenter, to the beer tastings at Aspetuck Brew Lab. You can hear it in the bars and clubs, with local musical talent at the Acoustic Café. You can see it in the attractions, from the sprawling seawall walkway at St. Mary’s by the Sea, to the tall ships at Captain’s Cove Seaport.
Featuring an ever-changing array of local vendors with everything from handmade soaps to doughnuts, from locally grown vegetables to freshly baked pies, from artisanal cheese to homemade ice cream, the Black Rock Farmers Market is the hottest part of the melting pot that is Black Rock. Once you step onto the field that serves as the market’s backdrop, you find that you’ve stepped away from the bustle of the avenue to a serene place, almost back in time. The community comes together as friends reconnect, families take time to picnic under a tree, perfect strangers play chess or parents can create a craft with their children. It harkens back to a time when folks knew the people who grew their food, when babies were pulled in little red wagons and when people slowed down to carefully think about their food shopping.
